The Vanier Cup
|
 |
The Vanier Cup was created in 1965 when his
Excellency, the late General Georges Vanier, then Governor
General of Canada, graciously granted permission to the
Canadian Save the Children Fund to name the trophy awarded to
the winner of the annual Canadian College Bowl, the Vanier
Cup.
In 1965 and 1966 the Canadian College Bowl was an invitational
event featuring two outstanding Canadian College football
teams selected by a national panel. The first winner of the
championship through this system was the University of
Toronto, and His Excellency personally presented the Vanier
Cup to the Varsity Blues at their athletic banquet in the
spring of 1966.
The Vanier Cup took on a new dimension in 1967 when the
Canadian College Bowl was declared the national football
championship of the CIS, with semi-final playoffs in Atlantic
and Western Canada to determine the championship finalists.
In 1982, the name of the National Championship game was
changed to the Vanier Cup, Canada's University Football
Championship. |
