I can see why you like the Bisons, such futility must remind you of the Leafs :tease:

This was a must-win game for the Herd and they came up big. I was at my son's baseball game but I received text messages whenever the Bisons scored. My phone was going crazy in the 3rd quarter when the Bisons turned a 10-10 tie into a blow-out.

The two teams are now both 1-2, along with Regina and Alberta. The Bisons have a bye week up next and then play Alberta at home on October 2nd. You can say the Bisons are tied for last, or that they are two points out of first!

I thought this could be a tell-tale game for the Lambs. They beat the Bisons to open and then lost 10-9 to Sask. They may be crashing back to Earth by this scoreline.

Just when SFU looked like a potential dominant team, they stumble for the 2nd consecutive season against the previously winless Evil Monkeys. The Saudi Albertans have had some tough losses and maybe they were just due some good karma. Questions must be asked about SFU. Perhaps it is just a case where the whole CW is never to be taken lightly.

3rd Quarter right now and it's 13-2 for Manitoba. Man I can't wait until Asper has his stadium and then the view from the cameras won't look like they are at a community recreational field.

The Bisons needed this one. The Evil Monkeys were on everybody's rising stars list and thoughts were that they may be mounting a challenge for a playoff berth and a national ranking. However, the Bisons slapped them around on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and dominated the entire game. A TD off a blocked punt with 20 second left got the Evil Monkeys their only TD of the game and made the score look closer than it really was.

On the downside QB Nate Friesen had some really bad passes in the shadows of the goalposts. Correct those and the Herd would have had 30+ points on the day.

This was the 2nd overtime win for the Banjo Dogs this year. For SFU they rebounded somewhat after looking awesome for 2 weeks then looking like mediocrity. Sask apparently has no offence.

HOLLYWOOD OUTLOOK:

Back-to-back wins have the Bisons feeling good about themselves. However, Calgary has been gaining steam and is now the consensus #1 team in the league. Calgary opened with one loss and then started to win. The Bisons started with two losses and then started to win.

The Bisons really controlled the line of scrimmage against Alberta last week. If they can do that again against Calgary then could win. However, the Dinos have to be big favourites at home.

The Bisons were down 23-0 in the first quarter and looked to be ready for a blowout. Yet by the end of the third quarter they held a lead. The Dinos showed some championship mettle by rallying in the fourth to win going away. The Bisons made lots of high risk plays, which allowed for the rally but in the end cost them.

All in all, my impression is that the Bisons could win a rematch. Also, the Dinos are #1 in the CW in everybody's books right now. However, Sask also has but one loss and cannot be counted out. And it just so happens that Sask will be here next Saturday afternoon.

The Bisons are tied for the 4th and final playoff berth with Alberta, and hold the tie-breaker over the Evil Monkeys. There is also a chance that SFU will have their opening two wins over UBC and Manitoba reversed due to their use of an ineligible player. A ruing should be out soon.

Here's the standings:

HOLLYWOOD OUTLOOK:

The Bisons are in a 3-way tie for 4th place whilst Sask is in 2nd place. However, after two losses to start the year the Bisons are looking tough. Sask had a break-out game last week, 44-7 over UBC. They had looked lucky in the early going, winning by either one point or on a shoot-out.

The Herd have done well against Sask. Check the U of M link for a complete set of scores.

There is also a chance that SFU's first two games of the year (both wins) may be lost b them due to use of an ineligble player. If so, Manitoba and UBC would each gain a win. Stay tuned.

I am scheduled to be in Brandon for the day. So I'll have to fire up the PVR and try to find the game on radio.

I thought I had posted this but looked at the thread and said "oops". Anyhow, the bad result was oddly affected by Sask's awesome kicking (a 55 yard FG and 94 yard punt), fumble recoveries (Sask recovered 6 of their own fumbles), and the Bisons lost the battle in the trenches (i.e. no running game for them and a big time performance by O'Gorman of Sask).

The Evil Monkeys came up with a big win at home. There has been much discussion about Regina having inordinate home filed advantage in that the local refs give out way more penalties to Regina's opponents at a rate out of sync with the rest of the conference. This, plus the SFU decision, puts the league in a real scramble.

This was the last Shrum Bowl before SFU returns to the NCAA for next year. UBC have been getting progressively worse as the season marches on. Of note was that SFU used an ineligible player for thier first three games and therefore forfeit wins over UBC and Manitoba. [U OF M LINK] [C.W. LINK]

The Bisons clinched a playoff berth with this ho-hum win at British California. It was played in harsh cold and rain and seemed to keep the excitement level down. But at this time of year a win is a win. And the remainder of the weekend results assured the Bisons of a playoff berth.

Saturday afternoon they will play the evil cheaters from SFU in their final game as a CIS school. SFU and UBC are now both eliminated from playoff contention.

OUT OF TOWN SCOREBOARD

Image Image
SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 42
REGINA RAMS 17

|> [C.W. STORY] ~ [BOXSCORE]

After the league looked to be closely contested, tonight's result has decided the top 5 positions leaving Saturday's games to be exhibitions. The loss eliminates Regina, and the win gives Sask 1st. Calgary will be 2nd, Manitoba 3rd, and Alberta 4th.

So next weekend it will be Alberta at Saskatchewan in one semi-final whilst Manitoba at Calgary is the other match-up.

A disappointing end of the year for the Lambs, who appeared to be capable of being a contender earlier on. The last time they played Sask they lost 10-9. How they have slipped!

TV: Shaw - Cable 9 in Winnipeg

HOLLYWOOD OUTLOOK:

The standings of these teams are misleading. SFU whacked the Bisons in game #2 a way back when. However, SFU was stripped of two wins for use of an ineligible player. If not for that mis-deed, both teams would be 3-4 and in a 4-way tie for 3rd place with Regina and Alberta. If that were the case then Saturday's game would likely have been for a playoff berth.

This game will remain notable for one reason: It is SFU's last game in Canada West, since they are headed to the NCAA for next season. You may recall that they formerly played in the NAIA before coming to the CIS. They will be leaving with a rather unremarkable record. They joined in 2002 and went 5-3 in 2003 and 2008. Otherwise they had losing records every season, including 3 seasons where they went winless.

Meanwhile, Calgary is at Alberta in another lame-duck game.

This could have been a mediocre lame-duck game. Instead, the teams played hard and it was well worth the time spent in the cold. At least the wind was down.

When I saw the SFU players take the field I had to feel sorry for them. They had to forfeit two wins as a result of their administration's failure to properly register a player (QB Caleb Clark) in the appropriate programs. Then several 4th year players get a double whammy, because they have no further eligibility to play in the NCAA.

If not for the forfeits this would have been a game for 3rd place. Instead, the Bisons entered the game with 3rd place guaranteed.

The 1st half was a wild west shoot-out, and the second a defensive struggle. The Bisons had a 27-14 lead at half time, but squandered the lead in the 3rd quarter. One SFU TD was from a fumble recovery deep in Bison territory early in the half.

However, SFU should have turned down the intensity and turned up the intelligence in the 4th quarter. They were trailing by 3 points and twice roughed the punter, giving a fresh 1st down away.

Some fans were in costumes, including Dancing Gabe dressed like Batman. I though he'd be a cowboy this year.
