A young Simon Fraser University student who died early Wednesday after drowning at the campus pool has been identified as one of the school's football quarterbacks.
After losing consciousness Bernd Dittrich was rescued from the bottom of the pool Tuesday evening. He died in hospital Wednesday morning, said police.
It is not considered suspicious. The official cause of death has not been released.
In a release issued Wednesday, Simon Fraser University named the victim as a popular 21-year-old Clan football player.
"Our hearts go out to Bernd's family," SFU's Senior Director of Athletics, Dr. David Murphy, said.
"The SFU athletics community has lost an exceptional young man. Bernd was not only a great athlete on the field, but also an inspiring individual in all aspects of life. We will miss him tremendously."
Dittrich grew up in Vienna, Austria, moving to Oklahoma for his senior year of high school.
