2010 MANITOBA BISONS FOOTBALL THREAD

The 2009 thread is [HERE].

Training camp just started for the Herd. There is the usual list of retruning players and new recruits. And, as usual, loads of Bomber fans who say "This is the year I'll actually make it out to a Bison game." Do it this year!

It seems most people see the Bisons as being in a tight fight for the 3rd and 4th places this year. At Gobisons.ca there are a load of pre-season stories: There have been some nice pre-season stories on the Canada West teams at HuskieOutsider.com, from Saskatoon. Here are the links to previews for each team: The Bisons schedule is:
  • Sep. 3 @ Regina 8:00pm
Sep. 11 Alberta 2:00pm University Stadium
    Sep. 18 @ UBC 3:00pm
Sep. 25 Calgary 1:00pm University Stadium
    Oct. 1 @ Saskatchewan 8:00pm
    Oct. 9 CONFERENCE BYE
Oct. 16 Regina 2:00pm University Stadium
    Oct. 23 @ Alberta 2:00pm
Oct. 30 UBC 1:00pm University Stadium
    Nov. 6 Canada West Semi-Finals (4@1/3@2) TBD
Nov. 13 Canada West Final (74th Hardy Cup) TBD
Nov. 20 CIS Semi-Final - Mitchell Bowl (AUS @ Canada West) TBD
Nov. 27 46th CIS Vanier Cup (2010 CIS Championship) 12:00pm University of Laval (Quebec City, QC)
UPDATED BOOKMARKS:
August 8, 1961
HAMILTON TIGER-CATS 38

September 3, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. CDT
Mosaic Stadium - Regina
Radio:
[UMFM 101.5] ~ [620 CKRM]

HOLLYWOOD OUTLOOK:

This game is a set-up for the LDC. Too bad it is on Friday (when fans are traveling) instead of Saturday (when fans are looking for a place to drink). Also, it would give Bomber fans a chance for a split. Otherwise they'll have to endure the melon-heads and unwashed hillbillies without a win under their belts.

Also, the Lambs made the playoffs last year after a post-season board-room decision stripped the Bisons of wins earned while they used a player deemed ineligible over old steroid charges.

Anyhow, this promises to be round 1 in a 4-way season-long fight for 3rd place between these two, Alberta, and UBC. A road win would go a long ways to getting the Bisons back to the playoffs.

One thing I'll want to see is how the QB position works out this year. Can Khaleal Williams succeed? He was CJFL player of the year in 2008 so has potential. Check out The Sun link for more on the recruits.

What an ugly start. I heard a lot of the game on radio and it can be said that the Bisons were scrambling to get into the game all night long. However, the game story did put some things into perspective:
Manitoba actually led the Rams in some statistical categories as they produced more first downs (19 to Regina's 16); net rushing yards (144 to 121); possession time (30:59 to 29:01) and pass completions (20 to 16) but also led in the all important category of overall turnovers (Manitoba had eight to Regina's zero). The Bisons registered four interceptions, two fumbles and two loss of downs on third down conversions.

In his first QB start at Manitoba, Williams was 20-33 for 170 passing yards but threw four interceptions and was sacked five times. He was the top rusher for the Herd with 70 yards on four carries. Fifth year Matt Henry contributed 55 yards on ten carries.
The turnovers were disastrous. The Lambs' D outscored their O! (Well, kind of.) Now the Bisons have to decide if the problem was o-line blocking or with the QB.

When reading the Sun story, you may as well brighten your spirits with a SUNshine Girl, in pink or white.

Radio:

TV: Shaw Cable 9

HOLLYWOOD OUTLOOK:

Right now the Canada West site appears to be going through transition and the U of M site has nothing about this game. But there are other links listed below.

Home wins are essential in the CW. Away teams travel with a smaller roster to reduce costs. So if the Bisons can "hold serve" they will be 1-1, as will the Evil Monkeys. The twist is that the Evil Monkeys walked into British California last weekend and trimmed the Tweety-Birds. Two away wins this early would put them in a solid position.

In the pre-season, most pundits had Manitoba, Alberta, Regina, and UBC in a 4-way fight for 3rd and 4th places. Here's hoping that transpires.

If you can't make it, the game will be on 101.5 and Shaw TV. Oddly, the other two games this week go Friday night.

Sask had a nice radio broadcast and a crowd of 5,100, no doubt waiting for a coronation of the Banjo-Dogs on the heels of their big win over Calgary. The Tweety-Birds, traditional doormats, were beaten by the Evil Monkeys last weekend and could not have been bursting with confidence. But that's why they play the games. Sask turned the ball over on numerous occasions and in the end thoroughly crapped the bed.

|> [C.W. GAME STORY] ~ [U OF C MEDIA GUIDE]

They have a nice live stats update link at the U of C, and tape delayed video. I mostly paid attention to the live stats graphics. Regina led early but Calgary took a squeaker. This was a must-win for Calgary. Two early losses at home would have been a disaster. The LIVE STATS link should still be active for a while.

MORE PREVIEW:

They have now posted a GAME PREVIEW at GoBisons.ca. The CANADA WEST MEDIA NOTES for the whole weekend schedule are also available at the new CW site. The schedule link is not yet active at the new CW site, so try the CIS SCHEDULE AND RESULTS PAGE.

If the Bisons can defeat the Evil Monkeys on Saturday afternoon then the entire CW conference would have 1-1 records.

I just noticed I neglected to post this result. Not missing much, folks. I saw 5the first half in person and then we had to go. Turns out we missed the carnage. Basically, the Bisons looked fairly good in the 1st half. They were down 10-6 but seemed to carry the play. Matt Henry was running harder then he did all last year. The calls and breaks were mostly in favour of the Evil Monkeys. I figured if those evened out in the 2nd half it would be anybody's game.

But the 3rd quarter was a disaster. Three big plays by Alberta resulted in two TDs and a FG and 10-6 turned into 27-6. The 4th quarter was an exercise in paint-drying. There was precious little activity of any sort.

So, Alberta is 2-0, Manitoba 0-2, and everybody else 1-1.

I was following along to this game on internet radio while watching other games on TV. It was actually a tense game for the longest time with the teams trading field goals and touchdowns. It seemed that almost every drive ended with points. But the last 30 points of the game were scored by the Bisons (a safety and 4 touchdowns).

Matt Henry was running very well. (You may remember him from his devastating Vanier Cup injury. He is fully recovered and running very aggressively now.) The offense was also in great form. It was nice to see, at long last.

This was a must-win game for the Herd. Had they gone 0-3 it would have been near-impossible to recover. However, there are now three teams at 2-1 (Calgary, Alberta, and Regina) and three others at 1-2 (Manitoba, UBC, and Sask). That says it all.

The Bisons host Calgary next Saturday at 1:00 pm in their homecoming game. If you are in Winnipeg be sure to attend. The game is always a nice event with a big crowd and plenty of festivities. UBC hosts Regina on Friday night.

The Evil Monkeys were the last unbeaten team in the CW and that came to a crashing halt in the Battle of Alberta. The Dinos were ripe for the pickings here. Coach Nill was serving a suspension and a bus-load of top players were on the injured list. The fact that they have survived their injuries and racked up wins over Regina and Alberta should serve them well. Maybe they will be the first team in the conference to get it together and pull away. The Bisons will hope that they wait at least one more week before doing so.

|> [C.W. BOXSCORE] ~ [LIVESTATS] ~ [HUSKIE OUTSIDER POST MORTEM]

The Battle of Saskatchewan (no doubt fought with banjos and slingshots) produced a surprise result. I think that after being stunned at home by UBC, everybody thought that the Banjodogs would come out guns-a-blazing for this one. Instead they were dominated. The scoreline flatters them. They mounted a late rally to make it reasonable. It was 37-13 to start the 4th quarter. This was a big win for the Lambs. They no doubt had a post-game possum buffet in celebration.

This was a tough loss, no doubt. But a big crowd on a nice day and a credible performance against a strong team should serve the Herd well. But any way you slice it, they are 1-3 half-way through the season. One more loss is likely all they can handle.

The Dinos were up 20-3 at half-time but the 2nd half was all-Bisons. Almost. The deciding factor, IMO, was Calgary's ability to run the ball. In the 2nd half the Bisons were all over the Dinos but a clock-eating ground game gave the Dinos the 3 points they needed for a 9 pont lead. Before the drive it was 23-17.

The hard-to-predict Huskies surely hit their stride in a must-win game. The result left the Banjo-Mutts and Evil Monkeys tied at 2-2 in the middle of the standings.

A crushing home loss for the second week in a row must be demoralizng for the Tweety-Birds. This was thought to be a toss-up. Regina moves to 3-1 and UBC falls to 1-3.

Radio: [UMFM 101.5]

HOLLYWOOD OUTLOOK:

If the Bisons win this game they WILL make the playoffs. If they lose, they will need 3 straight wins and I would not like those odds. I'll be watching the Moose v Heat and maybe hear the ending on my way home.

The Banjo-Mutts have been unpredictable this year. They were a pre-season favourite (along with Calgary) to not only win the CW but to challenge Laval for the Vanier Cup. After whipping the Urban Cowboys in pre-season they then dispatched Calgary with ease in week 1. But faster than you can say "Holy Moonshine" they got their butts kicked by UBC and Regina.

The Bisons are getting better every week. If they can play as well away as they did at home, they could pull an upset in the Land of Inbred Banjo Pickers!

LACK OF FINISH COSTS HERD THEIR LEAD

|> [U OF R GAME STORY] ~ [U OF M STORY] ~ [U OF M GAME NOTES]
|> [C.W. BOXSCORE] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]

The Bisons built up an 18-0 lead over the Lambs in the 1st quarter but thereafter just could not finish a drive. The final score was a bit misleading in that the Lambs scored late to salt it away. The Bisons even muffed a snap on a chip-shot field goal attempt.

The result leaves the Lambs all alone in first place! (And who would have thought that?) However, my impression of them is that they are not near as good as Calgary or Sask. The Bisons could win a rematch against the Lambs. I would not fancy their chances against the Dogs or Dinos.

OUT OF TOWN SCOREBOARD:

Image Image
CALGARY DINOS 17
SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 36

|> [C.W. STORY] ~ [C.W. BOXSCORE] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]

This was the Shaw feature game on Friday night and was the Dinos' long-awaited rematch after their week 1 loss. Instead it was a week 1 replay leaving both sides at 4-2. The Huskies are mushing their way to the top after some early season blow-outs against Regina and UBC, of all people.

Image Image
UBC THUNDERBIRDS 32
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 28

|> [C.W. STORY] ~ [C.W. BOXSCORE] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]

This was a key game for the Bisons because both teams are now 2-4 and the Bisons play both of them in the last 2 weeks. The Bisons would make the playoffs with two wins and EITHER a Calgary win over the Evil Monkeys OR if both UBC beats Sask AND the Evil Monkeys beat Calgary. This is because the Bisons win a 3-wayb tie or a 2-way tie with UBC. They would only win a 2-way tie with Alberta if they can beat them by 26 points.
