This was a back-and-forth game in whichthe Bison offence was an uncharacteristic liability. The defence more or less stymied the Tweety-Bords and did enough to have won the game. However, the Bison offence sputtered all afternoon, with several broken plays. Nevertheless, on a 3rd down play with mere seconds remaining, Yantz found Coombs wide open down the right side in the end zone and laddled a pass right into his mid-section. Coombs caught it while back-peddling and then was stripped. It was ruled incomplete. But, was it not a complete pass, followed by a fumble? And does a fumble not matter once the touchdown has already been scored? In any event, there is no replay rule.

The Bisons and Birds are now both 3-3 and in head-to-head games the score is 60-60. Sask is just ahead at 4-2. Next week is a bye week for everybody in the CW. The teams' remaining games are:
Fri Oct 18 Manitoba at Saskatchewan
Fri Oct 18 Alberta at UBC
Fri Oct 25 UBC at Calgary
Sat Oct 26 Sask at Regina
Sat Oct 26 Manitoba at Alberta

In a year when the Bedrock Boys were vulnerable and should have been knocked off their perch, they have gone 6-0 and have wrapped up 1st place with 2 games left. Sask still has to win their games if they want 2nd. A win by the Bisons next game and all of a sudden the season-ending Battle of Banjoland against Regina may be a game for a home playoff game.

In a sense, I was hoping for the Evil Monkeys hang on and win this one. But at this stage the Saudi Albertans are ham'n'eggers who just find ways to lose. Even against the Lambs. The Lambs have games remaining against Calgary and Sask so they could still go 4-4. Problem is, they have lost every game played against Manitoba and UBC so far.

Now, time for me to look up all the tie-breaking scenarios. I'll have 2 weeks to do it.

Oct. 13: Bye Week Is Over

Post by Hollywood2 » Sun Oct 13, 2013 11:44 am

This was bye week for the Herd, and for the rest of the CW and the RSEQ as well. Only the AUS had a full slate (of 2!) games. The 8 OUA teams to have byes in "normal" weeks had to play this weekend. The Bisons decided to take the week off and start practicing early for Friday's game in Saskatown. I believe that Sunday was scheduled to be their first practice day.

Oct. 18: Bisons Vault Into Second Place

Friday was quite a night to watch sports on TV and computer in Winnipeg. The Jets had a comeback win over St. Louis, the Bisons won 1-0 in hockey, and the Bison football team wrapped it all up with a key win at Banjoland's northern outpost. It was exhausting!

This one was two different games. The 1st half was a low-scoring Q-style game and the Bisons held a 10-6 lead. The 2nd half was the traditional wild west shoot-out, won by the Bisons 23-20. The Bisons could have trampled the Mangy Ones in the 2nd half, but amassed enough penalty yardage to plant enough wheat to feed the 3rd world.

The Bison offence looked strong, again. The defence is also improving. Much of the Hillbilly scoring was set up by penalties.

The win puts both sides at 4-3 heading into the final weekend. The Bisons have the edge based on points for/against. However, UBC could force a 3-way tie, in which Sask would 2nd, Manitoba 3rd, and UBC 4th. My guess is that Manitoba will play Sask in the semi-finals with home field TBA.

Oct. 19: Out-of-Town Scoreboard

Post by Hollywood2 » Sat Oct 19, 2013 6:47 pm

Saturday saw the third and final game of the weekend in the CW, the end of the OUA regular season, and some results of significance in the Q and A. Here we go ...

OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD

Image Image
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 0
UBC THUNDERBIRDS 60

:. [UBC Story] :. [Stats]

While the Evil Monkeys looked like a plucky team on the rise all season, they looked ready for circus season. Not so long ago, the Tweety-Birds needed a big comeback and overtime to edge the Monkeys. On Saturday it was all one-way traffic which became pretty ridiculous by the end.

One cannot blame UBC. There is a chance that they would need those +/- points. They are now tied at 4-3 with Manitoba and Sask. They lose out on W-L in a 3-way tie or a 2-way tie with Sask. But a 2-way tie with Manitoba comes down to +/-, and Manitoba held a 27 point edge. Personally, I don't think we'll see a situation where Sask loses and UBC wins next week. But if we do, Manitoba will be seeking at least a 33 + (whatever UBC beat Calgary by) win over the Monkeys in the final regular season game. That would not be amusing to watch.

In the dog's breakfast that is the AUS, Acadia is the only team to have outscored their opposition this year. So one would think they would at least make the playoffs. This win will help. Acadia's only losses this year have been against the SMUskies and Laval.

At least this wasn't a blowout for the Stinkers. What is creepy is that it looks like they'll go 0-8 after a pre-season draw with Toronto, a 4-4 OUA team.

McGill doesn't really look like a playoff team. Yet, they could get in ahead of Sherbrooke due to scheduling anomolies. I do hope that Sherbrooke gets in to make the playoffs in the Q more competitive.

So long, Carleton the Doormat. Hope you enjoyed your comeback. Now back to Cartoon U and your bogus courses. McMacAroni faces Ottawa next weekend in a quarter-final.

QUEEN'S GOLDEN GAELS 37

:. [Boxscore]

This was Guelph's chance to show that they could beat somebody other than a ham'n'egger or jabroni. They had 5 wins against such teams, a 1 point win over Windsor, and a 2 point win over McMac. Is this the least impressive 7-1 team in CIS history? Next week, the Queens have a bye and Guelph hosts Windsor.

The Battle for #5 goes solidly to Ottawa. The margin of this win did not surprise many. Yet #6 Windsor is still a mile better than #7 Toronto. And #5 Ottawa is a mile behind #4 McMac.

What a bad season for Waterloo. They were getting demolished by teams like the Blahs, who themselves are several time zones away from being playoff calibre. Sad. Just, sad.

The Urban Cowboys already had a bye wrapped up before this started. So I surmise that York is 30 points worse than the Urban Cowboys' backups. Yet, if the OUA went to an 8-team playoff, this would be a quarter-final match-up next weekend. And would probably be televised.

At one time it was looking like the Bisons were going to finish the season on the road. Now, however, it is looking like the Herd could get themselves a home playoff game. If you peek at the Out-of-Town Scoreboard, you will see that UBC could not pull off the upset of Calgary. Therefore, a Bison win over the Evil Monkeys would launch the Bisons into 2nd place and a home playoff game next weekend against the Banjo-Mutts.

And how cool would that be? The team has looked close to being a complete team at various times, but not quite making it there.

The Bisons started the season against the Evil Monkeys on a warm summer night before their biggest regular season crowd of all time. The Monkeys showed some offensive flair, and came dangerously close to a couple of wins in subsequent weeks. But after the bye week it may be that the Primates are simply looking to go back to the nice warm indoor cage at the zoo where they can eat bananas a swing about in a nice warm enclosure.

The last time the Apes won a football game was in the semi-final round in 2010. They were a surprise 4th place finisher that year and knocked off the 1st place Banjo-Mutts. The future looked bright for a rebuilding program. Well, they got hammered in the final that year, followed by 23 more consecutive losses. The Bisons will be hoping that the Monkeys are not due.

The Bisons needed this win to clinch second place and home field advantage in the semi-finals, and they got it. Easily. This was the 24th consecutive loss for the Evil Monkeys. They almost won a couple of games and it is disappointing that they ended the season so poorly.

This means that Friday night football at the IGF is coming. Bisons v Banjo-Mutts. Bundle up and be there!

This Saturday afternoon early game had little impact on the standings. This was either en epic confrontation of NFL-calibre defences or these teams haven't much offensive skill. The SMUskies have done enough to claim 1st place in the AUS and are therefore the only team in the CIS to get a semi-final bye. The Jeremies are in next year land.

Now that was quite the win, wasn't it?

The Bisons started slow and then appeared to take control of the game in the second quarter, entering half-time with a 17-5 lead. At the intermission the Banjo-Mutts must have had some illegal moonshine because all of a sudden they went crazy and took a 12 point lead. All that accomplished was it gave the Herd a chance to pull of a comeback win via two TD pass receptions by Nic Demski (his 2nd and 3rd of the 4th quarter). The Mutts had a chance to take it with a last play 44-yard field goal but the kick went into the Bison line.

A look at the linescore really illustrates the Bison roller-coaster:

Sask .... 03 02 17 14 36
Man ..... 00 17 00 20 37

Just read the stats links for the tale of the tape. It was wild.

Next week's game time, location, and opponent are TBD. If British California beats Bedrock U on Saturday afternoon then the Hardy Cup final will be in Winnipeg on November 9th. However, if the Dinos take that one then the final will be at Vince McMahon Stadium.

The Bisons booked their ticket to the conference finals on Friday, and the SMUskies had theirs booked via a bye earned through the AUS regular season. So Saturday was the day for the remaining six berths to be decided. There were some Sunday morning links available for the Bison game.

It is always entertaining to watch football played in a snowstorm. One could not even see the yardage markings on the field. They did have periodic shovelling and snowblowers so as to clear the goal lines and sidelines. But even that was not enough for the officials. Two of them missed a blatant out-of-bounds run by a Dino. That was the turning point in the game.

UBC was well in this one and could have won. In the end, it was just not to be. Can the Bisons go one step further next week? Bedrock U may have used up their breaks.

Everybody outside of Acadia was cheering for The Mounted, Canada's underdogs. Even though the AUS has only 4 teams, it has been about 10,000 years since The Mounted have been to the Loney Bowl.

This was a big day for the Footwear. Their first home playoff game for 20 years was a big event. Such disappointment. The Smurfs had their offence clicking, possibly for the first time this season.

Yet again, the Foxes showed they are just not good enough. I am still not all that convinced about Laval. This one seemed to be tied 4-4 forever.

The McUniversity had hiugh hopes for an upset. In the end, the Urban Cowboys showed that a McUniversity win here indeed would have been an upset.

By OUA standards this #2 v #3 match-up was a proverbial nail-biter. IMO the Griffins showed that they are really quite far from being a contender.

The Bisons have a big game in Bedrock Saturday afternoon. Could they win it? The odds are against them but, yes they could.

Last week the Extinct Ones were kind of lucky to beat UBC in the Snow Bowl. They had two major blown calls go in their favour (one when they ran out of bounds, and one when a receiver caught a one-hopper).

One thing the Bisons will need is a healthy secondary. They were clearly suffering against Sask, and Calgary is better than Sask.

The Bisons always have a "puncher's chance". The defence has been spotty, and the offence can put up a lot of points in a short time. Yantz, Coombs, and Demski are three of the best offensive weapons in the entire CIS. So, if they are "on" they could put enough points on the board to beat anybody.

In recent years, the Bisons have not fared well in Calgary. The stadium will likely be virtually empty, so crowd intimidation will not be a factor.

The winner of this will host the OUA winner in next week's Mitchell Bowl, aka national semi-final playoff game.
