Looking for flat-screen advice

Post by B-17 » Fri Nov 23, 2007 8:48 pm

Thinking of getting a 42 inch flatscreen, really like the Panasonc TH42PX75, but waiting for the price to drop to $1199. Also thinking of the Samsung HP-T4254. Will be using in a basement so glare isn't an issue. The kids have a Wii but won't be playing more than two-three hours a day. Have also considered LCD, but keep getting confused over contradictory information about LCD vs Plasma, prices keep changing, etc. Have checked the latest Consumer Reports. any advice?

Take into account the viewing distance. The further away you are, the more likely Plasma is the right choice. Also, if it's a darker room, Plasma seems to project better in that circumstance too. LCD does cut down on glare, but doesn't seem to stand out as much if it doesn't need it's glare-reducing capability. LCD seems to me to do better with gaming, though. I do like the Samsung name, they do great work with their products. Can't say too much about Panasonic. Really, you seem to have things right, for what your needs are.

Speaking of viewing distance, give this a quick look: http://www.myhometheater.homestead.com/ ... lator.html

IN THEORY, a Plasma should be better for gaming, because of no lag-time in the display refresh. Newer LCDs are improving on this, so that gap is narrowing.

Really, you're making a pretty hefty investment... try asking the store(s) you shop at if you can bring in your Wii and compare on some different sets. Or even ask if they have a console system you can try out for that purpose.
