Does anyone know what they are. What will play them?

FLAC - Free Lossless Audio Codec
FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality.
You can add a plugin to Windows Media Player to play them. http://www.losslessaudioblog.com/wmpmce-lossless-guide/

Players such as WinAmp or VLC will play an audio file encoded with FLAC.

Personally, I love VLC. It is a free media player that plays nearly every format (audio and video) and is very lightweight. It is also cross-platform so it will work on Windows, Mac or Linux.

I'm also a big fan of VLC. While I don't use it as my primary video player, it is invaluable for it's ability to play even corrupted video files.

VLC is awesome, it'll play almost anything. It will read/play, and CREATE all manner of streams. It even works with my tuner card as a video server.

FLAC is great, but keep in mind that it won't give you near the same compression as MP3/WMV and other lossy codecs. On average, it'll do about 2:1, vs. around 10:1 for 128kb MP3. But it does still save space and bandwidth over uncompressed WAV.
