Championship Saturday

Post by Rids » Sat Dec 05, 2009 9:12 am

With two already in the books from earlier this week (Oregon won the Pac-10 and Central Michigan won the MAC) it's kickoff time in Pittsburgh for the Big East game.

#5 Cincinnati vs. #15 Pitt

Winner gets a BCS berth. Cincinnati to receive the kick. Decent return and they'll take over on offense.

Nothing doing and it's a 3 and out.

There's also the big CUSA match up today of East Carolina and Houston. Case Keenum makes his case for the Heisman if he can pull out a big win. Later on at 4 Eastern is the SEC Championship between #1 Florida and #2 Alabama. At 8 Eastern it's the Big 12 Championship with Texas and Nebraska. Lost in the mix is Boise State putting their undefeated record on the line against New Mexico State.

Overall there's 5 undefeated schools heading into this final weekend. I can't remember a year with that many heading into the late weeks. A chance that 4 will be left standing as Florida and Alabama can't both win, but Cinci is in tough to maintain their undefeated status.

This Dion Lewis for Pitt is a phenom. Very shifty and pretty good speed. On the opening drive he had 51 yards rushing on 11 carries and a 5 yard catch (all 56 yards needed on the touchdown drive). Amazing! 15 touchdowns with 3 and a half quarters to go. Not bad for a freshman.

Cincinnati is a strong offensive team. Not sure if Pitt can hold up against that over the course of the full game.

14 plays from scrimmage for Pitt and Dion Lewis has touched the ball on each play.

Pitt is rolling now. 21-10 10:28 to go in the 2Q.

Lewis is at 78 yards rushing and Baldwin is at 72 yards receiving. Snow is coming down and should be a classic second half.

Cincinnati has made this a game. Gilyard is a special player for the Bearcats. Big 98 yard kickoff return for a TD and a huge play for 68 yards and a TD across the middle.

31-24 Pitt with 2:38 to go in the 3Q.

ABC just threw a stat up on the screen. In the first 11 games of the year Cincinnati had 7 turnovers. Today they have had 3 INTs and a punt blocked (deep in their territory...gave Pitt an easy TD from inside the 10).

All tied up at 38. If you're not watching this game then go turn it on. Pitt in scoring range.

Dion Lewis scores again. This kid is an amazing freshman. 196 yards and 3 TDs.

WOW!

Pitt scored to break the 38-38 tie but missed getting the PAT off the ground. Less than 1:40 to go in the game and Cinci marches like crazy and scores with a couple of big plays. Leaving 30 seconds for Pitt to get into field goal range. Currently 45-44 Cinci. What a game!

How about that facemask call on Cincinatti they decided to pick up near the end of the game? Between that and the end of the Texas-Nebraska game, two unbeaten teams won by the skin of their teeth.

I saw it as a hand dragged across the helmet which isn't facemasking. He spun the ball carrier with his hand on his shoulder. The Pitt player didn't complain which to me is usually when the refs get it right.

It probably was a facemask but the officials didn't want to cal it because they knew it was incidental. This means that the repeal of the 5 yd incidental facemask penalty is a failure. Time to reinstate it.
