PAC-10 talks expansion (and BIG TEN?)

So the Pac-10 will likely take two from Colorado, Utah, BYU, San Diego State, Fresno State, and Boise State

Big Ten could add a twelfth team (or, according to one crazy scenario, go to 14) by adding Missouri, Texas, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and/or Rutgers.

Mountain West potential replacements: Boise State, Fresno State and Texas-El Paso.

Big 12: TCU, and maybe Houston if two teams were to leave.

WAC: might have to look to 1-AA and bring in some Big Sky teams, or try to merge with the Mountain West.

Big East: Central Florida maybe? Anyone else? Losing more than one school could kill the conference for football.

Wow!

Wouldn't mind seeing Utah and Colorado into the Pac-10 (12), although a Boise State there would be a lot of fun too.

If Colorado moves from Big 12 to Pac-(12) then I would prefer to see TCU move into the spot. Would hate to see Texas move to the Big Ten and drop their Texas rivalries.

Big Ten talked about adding Rutgers a couple years ago, but Pitt would be a nice addition to the conference in both football and basketball. What would they call it though since there's already a Big 12. Maybe the Big Twelve?

There is also talk that the Big 12 has Arkansas in mind for a replacement, which would mean the SEC would probably go after a school from the ACC (Clemson? Georgia Tech?).

And if this round of expansion happens, most analysts think a playoff is even more unlikely. Will that cause Congress to get tough? Certainly the hypocrites at the NCAA will never do anything. They gave up control of 1-A football long ago.

Arkansas into the Big 12 to renew the Texas rivalry? I'd be ok with that. Of those two options I'd prefer to see Clemson into the SEC over Georgia Tech. Overall Clemson is a solid athletic school that could match up well with a South Carolina.

Making it the 12-pac?
Ah... I can see the marketing possibilities already.

Read something tonight suggesting that UMass might make the jump up from Div IAA to Div IA to join the Big East. That'd be a big jump for their football program but in a few years would be ok I think.

This story suggests a 12th Big Ten team is almost a sure thing, and 14 teams is also a possibility. Pac-10 expansion plans are going slower.

16 team conferences the wave of the future?

Post by argolio » Mon Apr 19, 2010 10:00 pm

This article deals with what Texas might do if the Big Ten expands. Similar to other recent stories I've read on this subject, this article also suggests that the Big Ten is seriously considering going to 16 teams, which would probably mean the PAC-10 goes to 12 just to catch up, and could mean the SEC goes to 16 to match the Big Ten. A 16-team Big Ten would probably kill the Big East as a viable football conference (assuming it takes 3 or 4 Big East teams), and who knows what the domino effect would be on the other conferences.

So they would go to 3 or 4 Super Conferences? Interesting way to destroy a product.

Could happen in two or three years. It's possible we'll have 4-5 BCS conferences, the Big East disappearing as a football conference, and perhaps a C-USA/Sun Belt merger and a MWC/WAC merger. And who knows, nothing might happen. Or something in between. But I'm betting on some kind of big kaboom, and if it happens, I think the success of the Big Ten network will be the catalyst for the makeover of division 1-A football.

According to the latest rumour, Nebraska, Missouri, Syracuse, Rutgers and Pittsburgh will be added to the Big Ten.

Notice the quotes from various conference bigwigs in the article. They must be on pins and needles.

Ok so we end up with 4 Super Conferences and the independent Notre Dame and Navy making up the top level of football. I would imagine that a Top 4 playoff would follow that situation.

Not Navy. They are in with the rest of the non-BCS shlubs.

One theory says that if Notre Dame decides to join the Big Ten, there might not be a huge shakeup. The reasoning goes that with Notre Dame, the Big Ten can sufficiently increase conference revenues without having to increase their footprint (Gary Bettman's favourite word).

The latest is that the Big Ten won't decide anything until December, but that could just be a smokescreen.

The Big 12 is on life support, if not dead

Post by argolio » Thu Jun 10, 2010 2:08 pm

The first domino has fallen. The Pac Ten has officially announced that Colorado has accepted an invitation:
http://www.cbssports.com/general/story/ ... -for-pac10
Nebraska is expected to be admitted into the Big Ten tomorrow, followed by Pac Ten invitations for Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State, turning it into a 16 team conference. The remaining Big 12 teams (except for Missouri, which apparently will go to the Big Ten sometime after Nebraska) might get folded into the MWC, which is also expected to add Boise State.

The Big Ten has been playing chicken with Notre Dame the last few months, but now both parties have to show their hands. If the Big Ten goes to 16 teams without Notre Dame (adding Nebraska, Missouri, and 3 Big East teams), the Big East will be dead for football. The SEC is then expected to raid 2-4 teams from the ACC, and the ACC might seek replacements from the now dead Big East.

Big 12 blew it by eschewing playoff (I love this article!):
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/n ... sion060610
So by not forcing a lucrative playoff, the Big 12 was the authour of its own demise, and was played for suckers by the Big Ten. What a crazy business!

Heard Coach Brown from Texas last night and he made some interesting comments regarding the conference championship. He said that in the time that the Big 12 has had the conference championship game that 4 times a Big 12 school that otherwise could've played for the National Championship missed out on the chance because of the championship game.

The Texas schools sound excited that they have saved the Big 12 (or whatever the new name will be). Should be an interesting season, see if schools in the Big 12 and Mountain West feel it necessary to put the boots to their members that are leaving. Perhaps we see a little message sending in the form of a late 4th quarter flurry of offense?

Im excited to see Nebraska in the Big Ten. Im predicting a fierce new rivalry between the Huskers and Hawkeyes. I was hoping for the Big 12 to completely blow up so Iowa State would end up in Div II somewhere. Lol.
