Team Canada Baseball - Qualify for Worlds and Pan-Am Games

Post by Hollywood2 » Sun Oct 17, 2010 11:16 am

This week the Pan-Am regional baseball qualifier wrapped up with Canada finishing 5th. The placing was enough to qualify for both the next World Cup (top 6 made it) and Pan-Am Games (top 7 made it). Here are Canada's scores, with link to a game story: The top 4 were the Dominican Republic, Cuba, USA, and Venezuela. The DR beat Cuba 5-2 in the final. The bronze game between USA and Venezuela was rained out and not replayed due to travel commitments. This regional qualifier was of exceptional quality. Canada took bronze in last fall's world cup held in Italy.

Canadian Jamie Romak (Royals AA) was tournament MVP and an all-star outfielder. Team-mate Chris Robinson (Cubs AAA) was the all-star catcher. For more on Team Canada, here are some pdf documents: The tournament Official Site is in Spanish. If you try the Google Translate version you still need an account to get anything, and lord knows how you get an account. A good international baseball site Mister-Baseball.com had a good story on the final and has links to the rest of the tournament as well. The same can be said for BaseballdeWorld.com. I also saw a story at The Havana Times, which contained this quote:
One final observation on developments of the past two weeks is in order here. The on-the-field quality of this tournament has definitely surpassed that of last year’s IBAF Europe-based World Cup event, or any other previous IBAF tournaments of past years and decades. There may well have been plenty of problems here in Borinquen with event planning, press facilities, and rain-plagued field conditions. But none have questioned the quality or level of the competitive baseball on display day-in and day-out. I have chatted with more than a dozen MLB scouts, with the Cuban press in attendance, and with several coaches and officials connected with USA Baseball. All are in universal agreement that there are as many as five or six teams here the equal of any of the top contingents that made last fall’s World Cup final round in Italy.
So while there was no medal, the goal of qualifying for the next events was met. Canada does have a record of strong recent performances in international events. This team contained high quality MLB prospects and they competed well against the power-laden teams from the western hemisphere.
