WEEKEND PREVIEW

Image UBC THUNDERBIRDS (5-11-2: 12 points: 7th place)

January 24, 2009 at 7:00 PM at Max Bell Arena
PREVIEW:
  • The Bisons continue their homestand with a weekend double-header against the desperate Tweety-Birds. The Bisons are now tied for 3rd place with Lethbridge. However, the 'Horns already have 2 games in hand and have a bye week. Oddly, the Bisons have two bye weeks in the last 4 weeks of the season.

Earlier this season, UBC swept the Herd in the weekend where they opened their fancy new arena, built for the Olympics. Had the Bisons even split that series, the 'Biords would be in deep trouble right now.

UBC is lead by Jeff Lynch, who has 5 goals and 8 assists in 18 conference games. After him the scoring is sparse. Darrell May is second in team scoring with 1 goal and 9 assists in 14 games. Nobody else has more than 3 goals. The Bisons have 8 players with at least 10 points, by comparison.

With the NHL in all-star mode, this is another good weekend to get out of the house. At least that's my plan!

TWEETY-BIRDS CRUSHED BY HERD

For two periods the Bisons played as bad as I have seen them play this season. They were tied 1-1 and the shots were even at 20-20. But still they seemed "off". Fortunately, they were not playing the Saudi Albertans nor the Saskatchewanites.

The first goal was credited to Calin Wild. However, it was Wild's centering pass that was deflected into the net by UBC d-man Nick Duff. D'oh! (Save your Duffs for after the game!) 1-0 Bisons after one.

UBC squared the game on a 2nd period PP. Darrell May (who later took some of his now-patented stupid penalties) converted a nice pass. 1-1 after two.

Then the 3rd period was all-Bisons. Rick Wood scored on the PP and then Greg Beller scored his 1st conference goal as a Bison. UBC was chirping constantly throughout the period and eventually their assistant coach was tossed. Cole Hunter notched his 9th (!) before Kyle Howarth's PK empty-netter wrapped it up.

UBC appear offensively-challenged. They have but 33 goals in 19 games. They next worst offensive total goes to Regina, with 41 goals in 20 games.

This is how the teams lined up:
  • Manitoba Bisons:

    Goal:
    Christie (Lobb)

    Defence:
    Thiessen - Lamoureux
    Workman - Brown
    Rumsey - Lenoski

TWEETY-BIRDS CHIRPING WITH SHOOT-OUT WIN

IN A SHOOT-OUT

The Bisons looked shaky for 3 periods the way they looked shaky for 2 periods on Friday night. I arrived late in the 1st period (due my son's hockey). UBC as usual had trouble scoring goals. However, they did suck it up and played 3 hard periods. They are now in 6th place, one point up on Calgary.

The lone Bison goal was scored by Jon Cara. There was originally some doubt that the puck was in the net. His line with Chris Benias and Terrance Delaronde was effective throughout the game.

The Bisons almost scored in the last minute of regulation when UBC almost deflected a centering pass behind their own goaltender. Then in the last minute of overtime Nick Hotson fumbled the puck at the side of the empty net as time expired.

The Bisons were 0-3 on the shoot-out. Those shooting were Kyle Howarth. Jered Walker, and Nolan Waker.
This is how the teams lined up:
  • Manitoba Bisons:

To complete the night of upsets, UBC picked up a win, and I heard the ending on the internet. This was not as much of a surprise since the 'Horns have been somewhat of an overachiever thus far. It was a back-and-forth affair and seemed to have the crowd and announcers going.

Anyhow, the evening's results come as a pleasant surpirse to the idle Bisons. They remain 3 points behind 2nd place Sask and remnain 3 points up on 4th place Lethbridge.

BISONS' BYE WEEK

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]

The bounce-back by the Evil Monkeys was not unexpected. Regina came out strong, outshooting Alberta 10-5 in the 1st period. But Alberta withstood the challenge, escaped with a 1-0 lead, and then smothered the Kittens, allowing only 5 shots in each of the 2nd and 3rd periods. The Primates also secured 1st place with the win.

Now this was a shocker. After the Dinos pummeled Sask on Friday I was expecting Sask to salvage a weekend split. But nooooooooooooooo! (Steve Martin hosts SNL tonight.) The Bisons therefore remain 3 points behind Sask and each side has 4 games left. I am not holding my breath, but a late-season run to second place is not out of the question for the Herd.

Image Image
LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS 1
UBC THUNDERBIRDS 4

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET] <> [CITR - radio]

This game was in progress as I started to post as I followed on the CITR radio link. The 'Horns appear to have hit the skids after streaking their way to 3rd place and a top 10 national ranking. The 'Horns will now remain 3 points behind the Bisons and now have only 2 games in hand. I once doubted that the Bisons could hold off the 'Horns but it now looks much more likely. It seems that the Lethbridge strategy to be outshot badly and let their goalie steal one has run out of steam. Ironically, they racked up 16 shots on UBC in the opening period tonight but could not get the lead. Anyhow, UBC must be a little bitter. They sweep and still gain no ground on Calgary in their race for 6th place.

Image For a neat story on McGill's 132nd birthday, [CLICK HERE]. January 31, 1877 was their club debut. Here were the rules:

Code: Select all

1877 RULES OF ICE HOCKEY

(Ed. Note: the word "Bully" refers to a face-off and the word "game" generally refers to a "goal").

1. The game shall be commenced and renewed by a Bully in the centre of the ground. Goals shall be changed after each game.

2. When a player hits the ball, any one of the same side who at such moment of hitting is nearer to the opponents' goal line is out of play, and may not touch the ball himself, or in any way whatever prevent any other player from doing so, until the ball has been played. A player must always be on his own side of the ball.

3. The ball may be stopped, but not carried or knocked on by any part of the body. No player shall raise his stick above his shoulder. Charging from behind, tripping, collaring, kicking or shinning shall not be allowed.

4. When the ball is hit behind the goal line by the attacking side, it shall be brought out straight 15 yards, and started again by a Bully; but, if hit behind by any one of the side whose goal line it is, a player of the opposite side shall hit it out from within one yard of the nearest corner, no player of the attacking side at that time shall be within 20 yards of the goal line, and the defenders, with the exception of the goal-keeper, must be behind their goal line.

5. When the ball goes off at the side, a player of the opposite side to that which hit it out shall roll it out from the point on the boundary line at which it went off at right angles with the boundary line, and it shall not be in play until it has touched the ice, and the player rolling it in shall not play it until it has been played by another player, every player being then behind the ball.

6. On the infringement of any of the above rules, the ball shall be brought back and a Bully shall take place.

7. All disputes shall be settled by the Umpires, or in the event of their disagreement, by the Referee.

BISONS DEFEAT DINOS

Tonight's win for the Herd must be frustrating the Dinos. The Dinos controlled large stretches of the game, including most of the 2nd period in which they outshot Manitoba 15-7. However, Calgary's 1-0 and 2-1 leads could not be held. The Bisons had the 3rd period's only two goals. The result assures the Bisons of a playoff berth, and a home series also seems inevitable.

Jered Walker and Myles Rumsey scored 2nd period goals, both of which tied the score. Mike Hellyer notched a short-handed winner and then line-mate Rick Wood got the late insurance goal.

Steve Christie stopped 32 of the 34 shots he faced. (He shut-out Calgary earlier in the season). He has now surrendered only 7 goals in the last 5 games.

Meanwhile Calgary goaltender Jeff Weber was angered by the loss. As a rink attendant opened the door to allow the Dinos to leave the ice, he kicked the door and almost knocked the guy over. One other Dino smashed his stick at the end of the 2nd period when they almost scored before time ran out.

This is how the teams lined up:
  • Manitoba Bisons:

    Goal:
    Christie (McHale)

    Defence:
    Lamoureaux - Thiessen
    Workman - Brown
    Rumsey - Lenoski

After 4 straight losses the Dawgs had to re-establish themselves. By the looks of things this was a solid enough victory. They had a penalty shot goal, as well. Sask remains 3 points ahead of the Bisons with only 3 games left. UBC remains one point ahead of Calgary.

The one-sided scoreline did not surprise me. I was all prepared to extol the virtues of the Evil Monkeys. However, Lethbridge did outshoot them 36-32. Odd thing is, Lethbridge were on a winning streak when in almost every game they were outshot but bailed out by their goaltender. Things appear to have changed. Lethbridge are in 4th place and are now 5 points behind Manitoba. Alberta have clinched 1st.

ANOTHER SHOOT-OUT LOSS FOR THE HERD

My son had a game so I only saw the last half of the game. When I arrived it was already 2-2. Rick Wood scored a nice go-ahead goal for the Herd and looked like the team was well on the way to a win. Then on an innocent play the Bisons coughed up the puck behind their goal and a Dino pass to d-man Dan Ehrman in the slot made it 3-3.

The Bisons are now 2-5 in shoot-outs, and 0-1 in regular overtime. Their 6 OTLs lead all of the CIS. Nobody in Canada West has more than 2. If the Bisons could have even split those OT games they would be level with Sask for 2nd place and a first round bye. As it stands, the Bisons are in 3rd place, 2 points behind Sask and 4 ahead of Lethbridge.

UBC have back-to-back splits, with both wins being 2-1 scores. Golatender Francois Thuot stopped 42 of 43 shots he faced. Their offence is clearly their problem. They now have 48 goals in 24 league games. Their 85 goals against are also worst in the conference. Put that together and they are fortunate to be in the thick of the playoff hunt.

With Alberta having clinched 1st place it is not surprising that they split this series. Lethbridge has been in a tailspin and were in dire need of a win. A few weeks ago they were challenging Sask for 2nd place and were in the national top 10. Anyhow, the win has them in 4th place, 4 points behind Manitoba with 2 games in hand. In this one, Lethbridge scored 4 goals in the 1st period on only 9 shots on back-up Alberta goaltender Real Cyr.

PREVIEW:
  • This series is the end of the regular season for the Bisons. Each side will be missing their Team Canada players who head to China for the University Games.

To listen on-line, check out http://www.bears.ualberta.ca.

For a preview story, you'll have to check the U of A site [HERE].

The Bisons are within striking distance of the idle Saskatchean Huskies (only 2 points behind). However, I am not holding out much hope for them losing to Regina on the final weekend. My guess is the Bisons will end up in 3rd place and host the quarter-final round.

HERD GOES DOWN IN EDMONTOWN
... 3rd place looks likely

The Herd out-shot the Bears 31-27, however after a goal from Rick Wood gave them a 1-0 lead they were unable to score another. The Bisons close their season Saturday night. The rest of the league will also have two games next weekend. Anyhow, 2nd place is no longer an option for the Bisons. However, 3rd place looks very likely. So the Bisons should be at home March 6th, 7th, and 8th (if necessary).

The 'Horns have really hit the skids. The loss keeps them 4 points behind the Bisons in the race for 3rd place. However, with this loss they are likely somewhat concerned about holding down to 4th place. Calgary outshot Lethbridge 32-17 in a seemingly one-sided affair.

Coming into the night each of these teams had 20 points and 4 games left. They were one point ahead of Calgary, and only two of those three teams would make the playoffs. With Calgary's win, the loser knew they would be in last place. With so much at stake, it is hard to imagine UBC being blanked on home ice. Frankly, the fact they are so close to the playoffs is a surprise. They have scored the fewest goals (48 ) and given up the most (89). If Regina wins on Saturday they will wrap up a playoff berth.

BISONS EDGE EVIL MONKEYS
... first win in Edmontown since 1995!

October 14, 1995 was the last time the Bisons won at the Clare Drake Arena in Edmontown. That is one heck of a long wait. Too long, in fact. So Saturday night's victory is, without doubt, a big confidence booster.

Since I was the perfect husband and took my wife out to a Valentine's Day dinner I did not listen to this on the internet radio. But, the summary speaks for itself. Nick Hotson and Rick Wood scored in the 1st period and goaltender Steve Christie then made 35 saves. The Herd was apparently clinging to life in the 3rd period, being outshot 14-4.

Anyhow, 4 points in 4 games on the season against the Evil Monkeys is pretty good.

The regular season thus ends for the Bisons, since they have the bye in next week's league finale. The Bisons will finish either 3rd or 4th (if Lethbridge sweeps Alberta) and in either event will host a quarter-final March 6th to 8th.

The H0rny ones needed a win and came up with a big performance against the Dinos. The result keeps them alive in the race for 3rd place and at least keeps 4th place (and home ice in the 1st round) likely. Calgary is now tied with UBC for 6th place. Lethbridge's destiny is in their own hands:
4 points against Alberta: 3rd place
1, 2, or 3 points against Alberta: 4th place
0 points against Alberta and Regina gets 3 or fewer points against Sask: 4th place
0 points against Alberta and Regina gets 4 points against Sask: 5th place

For those who always wanted to see the puddy-tat get that dang tweety-bird this result is refreshing. Regina's sweep gives them an outside shot at 4th and basically sews up 5th. UBC came form down 0-2 to tie the game and force the OT. However, the point for the OTL is key for the 'Birds since they are now tied with Calgary heading into the final weekend.

BISONS' BYE WEEK PREVIEW

The final weekend of the CW season goes this weekend. However, the Bisons have the bye. The matchups this weekend are:

Saskatchewan v Regina (home-and-home)
UBC @ Calgary
Alberta @ Lethbridge

The Bisons will finish 3rd unless Lethbridge sweeps Alberta, in which case the Bisons will finish 4th. If the Bisons place 3rd they will host the 6th place team in the quarter-finals, and if they finish 4th they will host the 5th place team. In either case, potential first round opponents are Regina, Calgary, and UBC.

Calgary and UBC are deadlocked for the 6th and final playoff berth and Calgary holds the tie-breaker. A good preview story for that series is at the CW site [HERE].

The various CW teams will be missing their Team Canada players who are off in China at Universiade. Canada plays China on Friday and Britain on Saturday.

Meanwhile, playoffs have started out east:
  • OUA

    LAKEHEAD THUNDERWOLVES 5
    WATERLOO WARRIORS 4
    (Lakehead leads series 1-0)

    MCGILL REDMEN 5
    OTTAWA GEEGEES 1
    (McGill lead series 1-0)

    CONCORDIA STINGERS 6
    CARLETON RAVENS 3
    (Concordia leads series 1-0)
    [CIS STORY ON 3 GAMES]

    WESTERN ONTARIO MUSTANGS 4
    GUELPH GRYPHONS 3
    (W. Ontario leads series 1-0)
    [CIS STORY]

    * The four series winners will join Wilfrid Laurier, UQTR, Toronto, and York in the OUA quarter-finals.

    AUS

    ACADIA AXEMEN 5
    ST. FRANCIS - XAVIER X-MEN 4
    (Acadia leads series 1-0)

    UPEI PANTHERS 4
    MONCTON BLUE EAGLES 8
    (Moncton leads series 1-0)

    * The two series winners will join UNB and St. Mary's in the AUS semi-finals.

THREE TIGHT GAMES ON FRIDAY NIGHT

Sask makes it official: They are the Kings of Banjoland! The toothless fans of both teams no doubt enjoyed this hard-fought derby. Sask has 2nd place wrapped up whilst Regina will be either 5th or 6th.

This is the feature series of the weekend. The teams were tied for the 6th and final playoff berth heading into the weekend. UBC took this one in OT to move one point ahead. This means that Saturday's rematch is "winner take all". UBC could grab 5th place if they win and Regina loses in regulation time.

UBC have been somewhat fortunate this year in that they have the worst offense and the worst defence but have still managed to stay in the playoff hunt. Conversely, Calgary have been somewhat unlucky. They are last but have still scored as many goals as they have allowed. Very unusual.

Anyhow, UBC came out like gangbusters with 16 shots on Calgary's goal in the 1st period. However, they only left with a 1-0 lead. The rest of the game was seemingly tight. UBC then scored a mere 13 seconds into OT.

(in a shoot-out)
[BOX SCORE] ~ [RECAP] ~ [GAME SUMMARY] ~ [GAME SHEET]

The Evil Monkeys, with 7 players in Team Canada's line-up at the Universiade in China, managed a win over the 'Horns to ensure the Bisons of 3rd place. The Evil Monkeys came out strong, outshooting Lethbridge 21-9 in the 1st period. However, the 'Horns' rope-a-dope strategy was in effect and they escaped with a 2-0 lead.

The Monkeys were not discouraged. They outshot the 'Horns 23-6 in the 2nd period and this time racked up 4 unanswered goals.

But in a game where the ice must have been slanted in one direction, the 'Horns grabbed the only 2 goals in the 3rd.

After 3 straight splits the seemingly invincible Evil Monkeys are looking more like quasi-vulnerable primates. They lost their #1 national ranking to UNB this week as well.

This was Team Canada's opening game of the tournament. Bisons Mike Hellyer and Stephane Lenoski both scored for Canada in the one-sided romp. Next up is Great Britain, currently 0-2.

Canada had the bye on the opening day. There are 2 pools of 5 teams. Each plays a round-robin and the top 2 from each play sudden-death semi-finals and finals. It would seem that Canada will have to play well to get past the Czech Republic and/or Kazakhstan to make the semi-finals.

Amazingly, the Tweety-Birds waltzed into Calgary and made the Dinosaurs go extinct. They outshot Calgary 18-8 and outscored them 4-0 in the opening period. Calgary rallied to take control in the 2nd period but could not score. And, since Regina was swept in regulation, UBC not only makes the playoffs but vaults into 5th place so that they will play at Lethbridge in the quarter-finals.

The Evil Monkeys came out strong and had a massive lead in shots on goal. The 'Horns rope-a-dope did not work so well in this one as the Primates were able to muster a lead. The teams entered the game knowing their final standing - 1st for the Evil Monkeys and 4th for the H0rny Ones.
