The Russkies and Yankee-Doodles start the tournament with games against two outsiders. Frankly, Latvia, Germany, and Kazkhstan are here to avoid being one of the two sides relegated to Division I next year.

Of course, the big games tonight are Finland v Sweden and Canada v Czech Republic.

So, that Tavares kid can sure play, eh?

TC was really rolling. However, the Czechs did look awfully soft and gave up many easy goals. That said, can Kazakhstan or Germany be any better? I suspect that the New Year's Eve game against the Excited States will be this team's first taste of decent competition.

Looking at these results, the pictuire is bleak for Latvia and Kazkhstan. Of course, Slovakia is likely wanting to be a quarter-finalist themselves.

I wish that I could get excited about this tournament but I just can't. This junior tournament is much like women's hockey internationally in that only a couple of countries have any kind of realistic chance of winning and only one country - Canada - even gives a hoot.
There is one thing that no Argo fan should ever forget - Rob Ford, Doug Ford, Paul Godfrey, Phil Lind and Larry Tanenbaum are all pure evil!

Remember Johnny is a lacrosse player first. That goal came as second nature as breathing! Was an amazing goal though.

EDITED: IIHF STORY LINKS UPDATED

Post by Hollywood2 » Thu Jan 01, 2009 12:45 pm

December 31, 2008

After a few days where the games were frankly not very good, business picked up significantly in this toiurnament on new year's eve.

Image Sweden 5
Image Russia 0

[IIHF STORY] ~ [EUROHOCKEY.NET] ~ [SUMMARY (pdf)]

The Swedish margin of victory was surprising. However, I have seen this movie before. The Russkies lose one in the round-robin then gather steam in the playoff round. If they manage a quarter-final win, they will play Canada. Meanwhile, the Swedes get the bye on the side of the draw opposite Canada.

Image Czech Republic 10
Image Kazakhstan 2

[IIHF STORY] ~ [EUROHOCKEY.NET] ~ [SUMMARY (pdf)]

Too bad for Borat. The Kazaks were outmatched here. Anyhow, the Czechs get the Russians in the quarter-final and cannot be discounted.

Image Slovakia 3
Image Finland 2

in a shoot-out
[IIHF STORY] ~ [EUROHOCKEY.NET] ~ [SUMMARY (pdf)]

This is a bit of a surprise. However, Slovakia have hit the medals and are no stranger to the quarter-final round. The Finns should able to clobber the relegation round teams and stay in next year's tournament. Slovakia now meets the Excited States.

Image Canada 7
Image United States 4

[IIHF STORY] ~ [EUROHOCKEY.NET] ~ [SUMMARY (pdf)] ~ [HOCKEY CANADA STORY & SUMMARY] ~ [TSN STORY]

After taking in the Moose game and tuning in on radio on the way home, I was gnashing my teeth at the scoreboard. 3-0 for the Yanks! After making a decision to get a new year's dinner at McDonald's drive-through, the game was tied as we entered the house. The game was exciting. However, this wa sno hockey classic. Many goals were, to say the least, wobbly. I believe the comeback will give Canada confidence. I am not sure about the USA's state of mind. They will need a good start in their next game.

Playoff scenario:

Friday, January 2, 2009
2:30 pm CT Quarter-Final #1 Russia v Czech Republic (TSN)
5:30 pm CT Relegation Germany v Latvia
6:30 pm CT Quarter-Final #2 United States v Slovakia (TSN)

Saturday, January 3, 2009
2:30 pm CT Semi-Final #1 Sweden v USA/Slovakia winner (TSN)
5:30 pm CT Relegation Finland v Kazakhstan
6:30 pm CT Semi-Final #2 Canada v Russia/Czech winner (TSN)

Sunday, January 4, 2009
1:30 pm CT Relegation Finland v Germany
5:30 pm CT Relegation Latvia v Kazakhstan
6:30 pm CT 5th Place USA/Slovakia loser v Russia/Czech loser

Monday, January 5, 2009
2:30 pm CT Bronze game (TSN)
6:30 pm CT Gold game (TSN)

Holy Moly

Looks like an upset in the making with Slovakia ahead of the US 4-2 with just a couple of minutes left.

The Hockey News website is much improved in case you have not checked it out lately. Their WJC site is [HERE].

Image Slovakia 5

I listened to the game at work and was shocked at the score. Those pesky Slovaks have never been push-overs and I guess they had some confidence coming off a big win over Finland to make it this far. The Hockey News has a good story on Jaroslav Janus [HERE].

Image Germany 1
Image Latvia 7

[IIHF STORY] ~ [SUMMARY (pdf)]

This result surely must disappoint the Germans. Since the rules require two teams to be demoted each year, it would seem that they will need a win over Finland to stay in the tournament next year.

Image Russia 5
Image Czech Republic 1

[IIHF STORY] ~ [SUMMARY (pdf)]

The Russian easily dispatched of the disappointing Czechs. This sets up a semi-final meeting with Canada on Saturday, which is what we all were expecting.

Since they changed formats with their print version I have avoided them. Might have to see if their website version is better than before.

After the upset of the USA one may have thought that the Slovaks were over-achieving and bound to crash to earth. However, they were right in this one and matters were not solved until an empty-netter put it away for the Swedes.

What a wild one!

I was at the Moose game and kept updated with the highlights shown on the scoreboard. (A nice bonus from the Moose, BTW.) Then the overtime nicely coincided with the 2nd intermission. I don't think the Russians ever got the puck out of their own end. However, it went to a shoot-out. It was neat to watch a TV in the concourse of the MTS Centre with a large group of people like that.

My impression is that this team has been fortunate to get this far. They have made loads of mistakes and their team play is poor. Now let's see if they can pull out another on Monday night.

Lousy way to have to win a hockey game; with a cheesy skills competition, but since those are the rules, we'll have to live with the result  .
I knew the Russian would give them a good game. These guys are great at playing possum. Never believe what you may see in any "weak" games they have played previously.

I am glad that Canada did win. I really want to see the Slovaks win a medal and I really didn't want to have to route against them. Now that the Russians and Americans are out of it, I really am kind of neutral about who wins. Yes I want Canada to win, but I have no problem with anyone else (except for the previously mentioned two) to win. We can't win it every year and it would be good to spread it around a little.
