2010 World Junior Hockey Championship

Post by Hollywood2 » Sun Dec 27, 2009 8:43 am

Opening day was a dud. I expected Canada to win easily over Latvia but that was ridiculous. And I truly do not see how the Swedes could hammer the Czechs like that. Anyhow, if you want links to the summaries etc., here they are:

Last I looked it was TEAM CANADA not Team Saskatchewan. So what's with the bloody green uniforms. That just pisses me right off. Canada should be in red and white. Not big on when they wear black either. Is this just a chance to sell more merch in Saskatchewan.

Will the crowds start to sell out or is the province still thinking about the 13thman?

Today is a 2 day update since Canada had a bye yesterday and I was at the Moose game. Thankfully, we shall be getting into the feature games as this tournament progresses.

Yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn. Well, it was better than 16-0. We can't be too hard on the Swiss. This was a typical scoreline between these countries. Team Canada was in green! (Yech.)

Canada and USA are both 2-0, Slovakia is 1-1, and the Swiss and Latvia are 0-2.

This was a big win for Russia and sets up the big game with Sweden for the pool title, and a bye past the quarter-final round. Of course, there could be a 3-way tie for the pool if the Finns can beat Sweden and then Sweden beats Russia. For now, Russia and Sweden are 2-0, Finland is 1-1, and the Czechs and Austria are 0-2.

I agree totally. I would not mind wearing green practice jerseys in an inter-squad game. But real TC jerseys come in two colours: White and Red.

Here is another 2-day update. Thank goodness we are getting past the jabroni games.

December 29, 2009

Image Austria 1
Image Czech Republic 7

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [TSN STORY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

The Czechs had to win this one to avoid being in relegation trouble. They could still get a 3-way tie for 2nd place but with their 10-1 loss to Sweden they are in bad shape for a tie-breaker.

Image Latvia 1
Image United States 12

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [TSN STORY]

Image

This decisive victory led to the victory parades in major US cities you were hearing about. Looks like a New Year's Eve showdown with TC is in the offing.

Image Sweden 4
Image Russia 1

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [TSN STORY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

This was a decisive victory for Sweden. Notwithstanding their exhibition loss to Canada, they are looking strong. However, I have seen the Russians lose in the round-robin then recover nicely in the playoff round.

Image Canada 8
Image Slovakia 2

|> [SUMMARY & STORY] ~ [TSN STORY]

Image

This game made the New Year's showdown official. And that's good. This tournament needs a tough game for TC. BTW, the Saskatchewan Huskies beat Slovakia 6-2. Let the Huskies keep the green uniforms!

December 30, 2009

Image Finland 10
Image Austria 1

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [TSN STORY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

Finland could yet be a sleeper. Austria had been getting not-bad results for a newly promoted team. The Finns (2-1 and +8 ) finish against the Swedes (3-0 and +16) while Russia (2-1 and +3) plays the Czechs (1-2 and -4). This sets up two 3-way tie scenarios. Here are the combos, assuming there are no wild scores or points for shootouts):
1. Swe and Rus win: Swe - Rus - Fin - Cze
2. Swe and Cze win: Swe - Fin - Rus - Cze
3. Fin and Rus win: Swe - Fin - Rus - Cze
4. Fin and Cze win: Fin - Swe - Cze - Rus

Image Switzerland 7
Image Latvia 5

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

The Latvians can take some solace in not being mercilessly pounded. The Swiss now face Slovakia in a New Year's showdown of their own - for a place in the quarter-finals.

Image Sweden 7
Image Finland 1

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [TSN STORY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

I was listening on radio while at work and while getting ready to attend the Moose game. The Swedes were outplayed (badly) but managed to score against the grain. In the end the Swedes won easily and one has to wonder if the Finns have an upset in them.

Image Switzerland 4
Image Slovakia 1

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [TSN STORY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

This was a mild surprise. It was a big game for both countries. For one thing, the winner avoids possible relegation. For another, a shot at a medal is a rare thing for them. I don't know if the Swiss can beat Russia, however. Anyhow, a few years ago the Swiss were losing by 10 goals or so. They are much better now. The lesson is don't get upset with those Latvian losses.

Image Russia 5
Image Czech Republic 2

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

The disappointing Czechs should avoid relegation. They looked OK against Canada in the exhibition game.

Image United States 4
Image Canada 5

|> [SUMMARY & STORY] ~ [TSN STORY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

Exciting game? Yes. Great game? No. Canada looked sloppy, like 5 year old Timbits players who haven't a clue. In the end they regrouped and were dominant. Had there been a 4th period they'd have won by 3 goals. Hopefully the lesson is learned. I don't think the USA will get to the final.

KING CONZ PACES SWISS TO MONUMENTAL UPSET!

Image Slovakia 3

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

This was a relegation round game. The win virtually assures the Slovaks of a retunr berth in world championship for next year. If the Czechs beat Latvia on Sunday then the Czechs and Slovaks will be assured of return berths and Austria and Latvia will be returning to Division I. The Austrians were outshot 41-26 but their goalie kept them close.

HOLY CRAP!

Benjamin Conz stood on his head in the Swiss net while hot prospect Nino Niederreiter scored the OT in this shocker. This is just what the tournament needed. On the downside, I was all ready for a Sunday afternoon of Canada-Russia. Shots were 52-31 for Russia.

The Finns did not seem to have it this year. I just saw the very ending of the game when they were basically out of it.

CANADA WILL GO FOR GOLD

Image Czech Republic 10
Image Latvia 2

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

This assures both the Czechs and Slovaks of remaining in next year's world championship. Their remaining game will be for 7th and 8th places. Latvia will play Austria for 9th and 10th places.

The promoted teams will be Germany (who won Pool 1A over Denmark) and Norway (who won Pool !B over Belarus on a shoot-out victory).

Image Switzerland 1
Image Canada 6

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [TSN STORY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

The Swiss did OK, actually. Canada was never going to lose. Yet by hanging close you never know what might happen. IMO, the turning point was just before half-way in the 2nd period when TC ran into penalty problems with a 1-0 lead. Instead of a PP goal, the Swiss gave up a SH goal. Canada never looked back.

UPDATE ON THE CLASSIFICATION GAMES

Image United States 5
Image Sweden 2

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

This was in progress when I last posted. It was really anybody's game. A late outburst by the USA did the Swedes in. They seemed to be in-and-out of every game and that's what cost them here.

Image Czech Republic 5
Image Slovakia 2

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

Athough this only for 7th place, it does give the Czechs bragging rights over their fellow countrymen.

Image Austria 4
Image Latvia 6

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

Both teams were relegated going in, but Latvia salvages a win after several egregious poundings. Sharp uniforms, though.

Image Russia 3
Image Finland 4

|> [SUMMARY] ~ [IIHF STORY]

Image

This gives the Finns 5th and the Russkies fall all the way to 6th. Why should we care? Because it affects next year's pools:

Pool A: 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th
Pool B: 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th

Right now that means this:

Pool A: CAN-USA winner, SWE-SUI loser, FIN, SVK, GER
Pool B: CAN-USA loser, SWE-SUI winner, RUS, CZE, NOR

So the loser of tonight's gold medal game could be facing the Swedes, Russians, and Czechs next year.

Correction: former countrymen.

Entertaining final, and with next year's tourney in Buffalo, and with so many U.S. players eligible to return, there's a decent chance we'll get more than one country really caring about this event (at least for one year).

Does this guarantee Canada and the U.S. will be the top seeds next year and therefore in different divisions?

I was impressed with US's performance in the final though my favourite Canada hadn't win it.
